Mark Ragins, MD is the Medical Director at the MHA Village Integrated Service Agency in Long Beach, California, an award winning model of recovery based mental health services. His practice and vision have been grounded in more than 20 years of clinical work with some of the most underserved and difficult to engage people in our community. He was featured in Steve Lopez's book, The Soloist. He has won a number of awards as well as being selected as a distinguished fellow by the American Psychiatric Association.

1. Brief history of the roots of the recovery movement and present growth including 12 step, consumer movement, rehabilitation, civil rights, staff

2. Central concepts of recovery – person centered vs. illness centered, strengths based, acute vs. chronic illnesses, recovering from the crippling rather than the illness, 4 stage Kubler Ross, hospice inspired model

3. Examples of recovery based services

4. Milestones of Recovery Scale – tracking recovery and differentiating services by level of recovery

5. Three levels of recovery services – unengaged, engaged but poorly self coordinating, self responsible – care taking vs. growth oriented services, a recovery based system design

6. How do we get there? Process of system and program transformation – Ken Wilber’s 4 domains, 5 stages of transformation, common crucial issues, challenges, and benefits
